Khao Kua - Shophouse Dining Room

An urban shophouse dining space, Khao Kua serves home-cooked Thai-Isarn food in a simplified and modern setting. Located in the tourist-populated area of Pratunam, we saw that the area is still missing a proper som tum restaurant. Hence, we want to introduce a modern Thai-Isarn dining experience that is appealing, accessible, and convenient for foreigners and locals in the area.  

As an ingredient, Khao Kua is subtle and simple. It has a beautiful, smoky aroma that complements and enhances the flavour and texture of the dish without interfering with the taste of the food itself. Just like Khao Kua, the design of the shophouse and its atmosphere are put together to enhance the dining experience, rather than distracting diners from the food. The design of the restaurant breaks away from the bright colours and patterned details of stereotypical Thai restaurants. Instead, the design promotes simplicity through the key elements of wood plank and wire mesh, which serve as the main visual reference.
